Youth Missions & Outreach

Special Youth Mission Projects

Each year the Youth Council chooses three major missions and organizes supporting programming, events, and publicity. The major missions for 2011-12 are:
Fall: Backpack Buddies
Winter: STOP Hunger Now.
Spring: Heifer Project

Backpack Buddies

The BackPack Buddies Program provides children from food-insecure homes with weekend meals during the school year. FUMCC youth are helping to collect and pack bags with kid-friendly non-perishable food. The children served by this program receive a backpack containing six balanced meals and two healthy snacks at the end of every week. The children are served in partnership with school principals, guidance counselors, and various after school programs.

  • 100,000 children on our service area are on free or reduced school lunch
  • Over 800 children are enrolled in BackPack Buddies at 24 sites in 7 counties
  • $350 provides a child a BackPack filled with nutritious food each weekend for the entire school year
Please bring food, backpacks, or donations to the Fall kickoff!

Bolivian Mission Team
A team of 10-15 youth and adults travels to Boliva each July to assist children in need. Donations of financial assistance or medical supplies are acccepted throughout the year. Contact:  David Barrier or Kelley Stephens.

Youth Mission Week
Mission Week is an opportunity for youth from FUMC, White Plains UMC, and Mt. Zion Church to serve together five local missions in July. The days are filled with devotional time, service, fellowship, and recreation. Each day begins at 8:30 am and ends at 5:00 pm. This is one of our most popular youth events; however space is limited due to the challenges of providing enough transportation and finding chaperone support. Contact: Patty Gothard

Trunk or Treat
This event is cancelled for 2011 due to the Youth Visioning Retreat which is being held the same weekend as well as the fact that Oct. 31 is a WCPSS teacher workday this year. The youth sponsor this safe family environment for trick-or-treaters in the church parking lot. Church members as well as children from neighborhoods surrounding the church wear costumes and gather in the church parking lot to see cars with fun themes and receive candy. Youth who can’t attend are encouraged to bring candy donations to Sunday School. Youth are on hand to bring their vehicle and decorate them, guide drivers to their parking places in the upper (west) part of the lot, greet guests as they arrive and help them find parking in the lower (east) part of the lot. Contact: Jason Darden.

CROP Walk
October 2, 2011.Family/Small Group Opportunity.CROP stands for Communities Reaching Out to People, and is an annual ecumenical, interfaith, multi-cultural event sponsored by Church World Service to promote hunger education. We walk because people in other nations walk - many walk 10K just to find fresh water or firewood. The Cary Area CROP Walk is a community-wide effort to address the problem of hunger, both here in our home area and around the world.

Feed 5000

In keeping with John 6:1-14 and responding to Christ’s call, all who come to FUMCC are invited to feed body and soul of our Cary and Wake County neighbors. The vision is to feed 5,000 hungry Cary residents with God’s word and with food. When you come to First United Methodist Church, you are invited to bring and present a food gift of at least one pound of non-perishable food each and every Sunday. Please attach a scripture verse of your choosing to the item in order to feed the soul of the person who will receive the food. Food is delivered to the Christian Community Action (Dorcas Shop) for distribution to our Cary neighbors. Contact Jeanette Bell or info@fumc-cary.org

Gleaning
Family/Small Group Opportunity. Harvest fresh product to feed the hungry. Participants depart in church vans and personal vehicles from the gravel parking lot across from the Log Cabin at 8:00 am on the 3rd Saturday of each month during the harvest season, April - October. We arrive back at FUMC by 12:00 pm. In case of cancellation for any reason, participants help weed and water the Gracious Harvest garden on campus near the parking lot.
