Health Ministries

Welcome to the FUMCC Health Ministries

The Health Ministries Team at FUMC is a group of people acting on faith, inspired by Christ’s witness to the healing activity of God. The team reaches out to strengthen, empower and improve the spiritual, physical, mental health of this congregation and the community we serve through increasing self-knowledge, personal responsibility and interdependence among God’s people. This ministry crosses the entire life span as well as the entire spectrum of health need. It does not replace your healthcare professional. The team strives to foster a spiritual healing presence in the local and global community and to serve as a reminder that Christ came to give us abundant life.

"I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly."  -  John 10: 10 (NKJV)

New Leader for Health Ministries

Carolyn Corn, who has served Health Ministries for 4 1/2 years, welcomes Cathy Busby, our new leader for Health Ministries. Cathy has much experience in many facets of Health Care. We feel that the "Creation Health" model will help meet many of the needs expressed in the Health Care Survey conducted earlier this year. Some of the needs expressed were: Exercise, Weight Loss and Stress Management.  You will hear more about these plans soon and hope to have active participation.

A Special Invitation from Winona Stallings, Partners in Health & Wholeness, An Initiative of the North Carolina Council of Churches:
Our friends at the Living Healthy Chronic Disease Self Management Program (CDSMP) would like to invite members of your congregation to take advantage of their FREE online workshop - Better Choices, Better Health™ - which is designed to help individuals self-manage their chronic conditions (e.g., diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure, chronic pain, anxiety, etc.).  Specifically, the workshop can help you and the people you care about:

·         Find practical ways to deal with pain, fatigue and stress

·         Discover better nutrition and exercise choices

·         Understand easy ways to relax

·         Learn better ways to talk with your doctor and family

·         Get the support you need

Better Choices, Better Health™ is a proven, life-changing program.  If you would like to take advantage of this special limited time offer or to simply learn more about it, please visit https://selfmanage.org.

Protect the Mentally Ill

One way of keeping the plight of the mentally ill in front of the legislators would be by sending e-mails to the individual legislators. If you are interested in protecting the mentally ill, please write or e-mail to the legislators to keep mental health issues in the forefront. As the NC General Assembly considers how to spend the limited funds, the mentally ill need our protection. You can use the linked letters from Gerry Akland, President of NAMI, and Carolyn Corn, former psychiatric nurse, as samples to create your letter. Also a list of targeted people to receive letters is provided. Go to NC General Assembly to find e-mail addresses. The governor's e-mail address is governor.office@nc.gov.  Other links are also provided here.

Creation Health

Recently, members of our committee participated in a series of classes on "Creation Health".  This was recommended to us by Pastor William Green. We found that this was a very holistic way of approaching health. It is based on the 4 wheels of health: Physical, Relational, Emotional, and Spiritual. It is based upon the 8 principals of God's plan from Genesis:

CREATION: Choice, Rest, Environment, Activity, Trust, Intimacy, Outlook and Nutrition

For those who are interested in teaching the Creation Health program, you may find the Instructor Book, CD's for 8 class series, Study Books and Small Group Participant books in the curriculum library. Individual books may be ordered from Creation Health.

Dietary Consultation
At a Health Ministries program on "Healthy Holiday Cooking," there was mention of the fact that Blue Cross/Blue Shield is one of the insurance companies who will pay for dietary consultation. Diane Danchi, Licensed Dietitian/ Nutritionist from Rex Wellness, brought this to our attention. Any of you who have BCBS insurance and are interested in learning more about good nutrition might want to contact BCBS about your coverage for this wellness program. There are several qualified agencies out there.

Organ Donation
There are over 103,000 people waiting and over 3,000 are right here in our state of North Carolina for Organ Transplants. There is no cost just a good hearted person that wants to give of themselves.

Think about it and have a discussion with your family & friends and have a Heart put on your license if you would like to become an Organ & Tissue Donor. You can have the chance to save 8 lives and enhance the lives of 50 others by becoming a tissue donor as well. You can have the Heart placed on your license at DMV and you can also register to be an Organ & Tissue Donor at www.donatelifenc.org

Arty Totillo from Carolina Donor Services spoke at the Celebration Service on 11/22/09 "Don't Take Your Organs To Heaven, Heaven Knows We Need Them Here"  If you need further information, contact Arty at 919-234-3428.

Arty's story:
I was transplanted back in NY in 2003 with a liver that I had waited for just about 5 yrs with the shortage of donors. The organs go to the person that is the sickest at the time. Then when I finally was sick enough the doctors told my wife if I didn't receive a liver within a few days, I wasn't going to get one.  I would be too sick to receive the liver and they told my wife I would only last maybe 2 weeks at the most. But with the Grace of God I received the greatest GIFT that any one could get on Mothers Day 5/11/03.
Then last year I went into rejection and was placed back on the waiting list for another liver and kidney as well. But putting my faith in God and the doctors I am doing much better at the present time.
