DISCIPLE Bible Studies

DISCIPLE is a program of disciplined Bible study aimed at developing strong Christian leaders.  it focuses on the disciple as a learner, believer, follower, proclaimer, and servant while providing the fellowship of a small group for study, prayer, preparation, support and servanthood.  DISCIPLE assumes that the Bible is key to renewal in the church and affirms that the canon was formed as it is in order for God to speak to us.  The study gives the Old and New Testaments equal time, emphasizing the wholeness of the Bible as a revelation of God and draws upon the work of scholars to aid understanding of the Bible.  At FUMCC, the DISCIPLE curriculum is offered for spiritual enrichment in a variety of ways.  Core studies span 30-34 weeks and are typically scheduled to run from the beginning of September through the end of May.  Materials are also available for short-term Bible study (8-11 weeks) offered to small groups or Sunday school classes.

DISCIPLE I: Becoming Disciples Through Bible Study
This is the foundational 34-week course for the core DISCIPLE studies. Groups of 8-14 members commit to daily Scripture reading and meet once a week for two and a half hours to discuss the reading assignments and reflect on how to become more faithful Disciples of Christ. Evening and weekday courses are usually available for enrollment each September. Advanced DISCIPLE Courses
After completing DISCIPLE I, members who are interested in further development of Biblical understanding and discernment can choose to enroll in the following courses (availability based on interest; courses may be taken in any order):

DISCIPLE II: Into the Word, Into the World (more info)
DISCIPLE III: Remember Who You Are (more info)
DISCIPLE IV: Under the Tree of Life (more info)

Short-term DISCIPLE for Small Groups or Sunday School
Sunday school classes or small groups interested in enriching their studies through DISCIPLE may utilize materials from one of six short-term DISCIPLE study programs (more info), regardless of whether the group’s members have ever taken DISCIPLE I. Group leaders may contact Rev. Alice Kunka to request materials.

Emmaus Community

The Emmaus Community at FUMCC exists to help grow the spiritual leadership of adults at our church. We do this by:

  • Sponsoring persons to attend a Walk to Emmaus event (held Thursday through Sunday night)…There are four women’s walks a year and three men’s walks a year.

  • Helping persons to participate in an accountability group following their walk

  • Organizing and sponsoring fellowship and continuing education events for persons to continue their spiritual growth

  • Involving persons in the Heart of Carolina Emmaus Community (to attend monthly Gatherings, Walk events, and to serve behind the scenes for each walk)

Emmaus is a movement sponsored by the United Methodist Church through the Upper Room Ministry. For more information you may contact www.upperroom.org and click “Walk to Emmaus” or visit www.carolinaemmaus.org.

Emmaus Walk

A highly-structured weekend for adults of all ages designed to strengthen and renew the faith of Christian people, and through them their families, congregations and the world in which they live. Discussions include how grace is real in one’s life and how one can live in the life of grace, bringing grace to others. The walk is a 72-hour experience in Christian community in which pilgrims learn to grow in God’s grace. There are seven walks a year. Persons must have a sponsor to attend a walk and meet walk requirements.
