The Christian Century Magazine

The FUMC Library subscribes to "The Christian Century" magazine. A magazine may be read in the library or checked out for one week. A form in the front of the notebook should be used to check out and check in a magazine. Each issue includes articles on current events, book reviews, devotionals based on the lectionary, and other topics of interest. A yearly index is available in the last issue of each year.

January 15, 2008: This issue has two articles of interest:  “A wizard’s mission” discusses the Christian themes in the Harry Potter books.  Recent news articles about Philip Pullman and his “His Dark Materials” trilogy have brought attention to the first book in the trilogy, “The Golden Compass.”  The movie was released in December.  The article about Pullman and his books is “The enemy church” and discusses his agenda.  In a 2001 interview with Pullman he said, “I’m trying to undermine the basis of Christian belief.”

January 29, 2008: This issue includes an article of an interview with John Polkinghorne, world-renowned physicist who has been ordained an Anglican priest.  The interview provides the reader with his view of science and religion.  He has written several books about religion and science.  The Church Library has one of his books, “Science and the Trinity.”

Also note: The Church Library has a copy of "Safe Sanctuaries: Reducing the Risk of Child Abuse in the Church" and "Safe Sanctuaries: Reducing the Risk of Abuse in Youth Ministries."

Magazines may be checked out for one week by signing on the form inside the notebook. Please return them promptly for others to enjoy. Thank you.
